On 7 June, the Special Olympics Flame of Hope was lit in Athens, Greece and then began making its way to the Special Olympics World Games Berlin 2023. This flame, carried by members of the 2023 LETR Final Leg, will light the cauldron during Opening Ceremonies to mark the official start to the Games.
The LETR run up to the Games started on 14 June in the state of Brandenburg and over the course of four days will be carried 37 km/23 miles through all the Host Towns until it’s final stop at the historic Olympic Stadium in Berlin. The 2023 LETR Final Leg is comprised of 85 International Torch Runners, including 77 Law Enforcement volunteers and eight Special Olympics Athletes from across the globe. The Torch Runners are joined by 10 German officers and 30 German athletes.
